Veteran Malayalam actor, director and screenplay writer Sreenivasan passed away this morning at the age of 69. He breathed his last at a district hospital in Thripunithura, Ernakulam district, after battling health issues for some time.
Born in 1956 at Pattiam village in Kannur district, Sreenivasan went on to become one of the most influential and respected creative forces in Malayalam cinema. With a remarkable career spanning 48 years, he made lasting contributions as an actor, screenwriter and director.
Sreenivasan acted in more than 200 Malayalam films, excelling equally in comedy and leading roles. He is widely credited with giving a new, realistic and socially rooted dimension to comedy acting in Malayalam cinema. His sharp wit, powerful dialogues and socially conscious themes earned him immense popularity and critical acclaim.
As a screenwriter and director, he delivered numerous hit films and played a key role in shaping contemporary Malayalam cinema. His iconic collaborations with superstar Mohanlal resulted in several superhit and evergreen films that continue to be celebrated by audiences across generations.
Sreenivasan was also a contemporary and classmate of legendary actor Rajinikanth, a fact often recalled with pride in cinematic circles.
He is survived by his sons — popular actor and singer Vineeth Sreenivasan and actor Dhyan Sreenivasan — who have both carved their own space in the Malayalam film industry.
The passing of Sreenivasan marks the end of an era in Malayalam cinema. His legacy as a fearless storyteller, brilliant actor and social commentator will continue to inspire generations of filmmakers and film lovers.
