Kochi: In a major development that has once again shaken the Malayalam film industry, the entire 17-member Executive Committee of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), led by President Shwetha Menon, resigned on Thursday following mounting internal disputes and controversies within the organization. The resignations were submitted ahead of the association’s General Body Meeting.

The immediate trigger for the mass resignation is reported to be the controversy surrounding actress and executive committee member Ansiba Hassan, who recently stepped down from her post and publicly alleged that she had been subjected to character assassination, mental harassment, and a lack of support from the association’s leadership. Ansiba claimed that several remarks and allegations made against her had caused severe emotional distress and that the office-bearers failed to adequately address her concerns.

Adding to the turmoil, actress Vincy Aloshious had earlier lodged complaints with film industry bodies, including AMMA, regarding alleged misconduct by a fellow actor. The handling of the complaint and the growing differences among members reportedly intensified tensions within the association.

Following an emergency meeting of the Executive Committee, the office-bearers collectively decided to step down, citing the need to protect the credibility and democratic functioning of the organization. Sources indicate that the committee felt it would be appropriate for a new leadership team to take charge and restore confidence among members.

In a statement, President Shwetha Menon clarified that the resignations were not prompted by any single individual or complaint but were intended to facilitate a smooth and transparent transition of leadership. She emphasized that AMMA remains committed to safeguarding the interests and welfare of Malayalam film artists and that the General Body Meeting will decide the future course of action.

The development marks yet another turbulent chapter in AMMA’s history. In 2024, the association’s previous executive committee headed by actor Mohanlal had resigned following controversies that emerged after the release of the Justice Hema Committee report on issues faced by women in the Malayalam film industry.

With the resignation of the current committee, all eyes are now on the upcoming General Body Meeting, where members are expected to discuss the crisis and decide on the formation of a new governing body to lead the organization forward.

AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists), founded in 1994, is the apex body representing actors and actresses of the Malayalam film industry and has played a significant role in the welfare and representation of artists for over three decades.
