In Memory of Late Smt. Nalini Subramanian Kunju (24 June 1964 – 31 May 2026)

The Mumbai Malayalee community and the animal welfare fraternity mourn the loss of Late Smt. Nalini Subramanian Kunju, a compassionate humanitarian, animal welfare activist, and environmental advocate whose life was dedicated to serving the voiceless and vulnerable. She passed away on 31 May 2026, leaving behind an enduring legacy of kindness, service, and selfless commitment to all living beings.

Born on 24 June 1964, Nalini was the beloved younger daughter of Late Shri Ayyod Raman and Late Smt. Ammini Raman. She was married to Shri Subramanian Kunju of Kanjirani House, Kalladikode, Palakkad, Kerala, and was a devoted mother to Sunish Subramanian Kunju and Nisha Subramanian Kunju.

Though she preferred to work quietly behind the scenes, her impact was profound and far-reaching. A passionate animal lover from an early age, Nalini Amma dedicated her life to the rescue, care, and rehabilitation of orphaned, injured, and abandoned animals and birds. Her home became a haven for countless creatures in distress, reflecting the immense compassion that defined her character.

She was the Co-Founder of Plant & Animals Welfare Society – Mumbai (PAWS-Mumbai), established in 2002, and later played a pivotal role in founding the Amma Care Foundation (ACF) in 2017. Through these organizations, she inspired a culture of compassion, environmental responsibility, and animal welfare, touching the lives of thousands across the country.

A firm believer in empowering future generations, Nalini Amma encouraged children and young people to become ambassadors of animal welfare and environmental conservation. While she remained away from public recognition, she mentored and guided many young volunteers, instilling in them the values of empathy, responsibility, and respect for nature. Today, her children, Sunish and Nisha, continue to carry forward the mission and ideals she cherished throughout her life.

Her dedication extended to official service as well. She was associated with the Animal Welfare Board of India and the Committee to Monitor Animal Welfare Laws in Maharashtra, serving as an Honorary Animal Welfare Officer. Through her tireless efforts, she contributed significantly to the protection of animals and the promotion of humane values in society.

More than an activist, Nalini Amma was a teacher in the truest sense. Through her actions and example, she taught countless children and young adults the importance of kindness, compassion, and coexistence with all living beings. The lessons she imparted continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.

Her passing has left an irreplaceable void among family members, friends, fellow activists, and the wider community. Yet her spirit lives on in every rescued animal, every tree planted, every act of kindness shown to a living creature, and every individual inspired by her remarkable journey.

Late Smt. Nalini Subramanian Kunju’s life stands as a shining example of selfless service and unconditional love. Her legacy is not measured by awards or public recognition, but by the countless lives she transformed through her compassion and dedication.

Though she is no longer with us, her mission will continue through the many people she inspired and the causes she nurtured. Her memory will remain a guiding light for generations to come.

“A life dedicated to serving the voiceless never truly ends; it echoes forever in every life it has touched.”

Kerala In Mumbai extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and pays tribute to a remarkable woman whose life was a beacon of compassion and service.
