Mumbayile Malayali Prathibhakal is a regular feature of Kerala in Mumbai, dedicated to celebrating the lives, achievements, and enduring contributions of Malayalees who have distinguished themselves in Mumbai through talent, dedication, perseverance, and hard work.
For decades, members of the Malayali community have played a significant role in shaping the social, cultural, educational, and economic landscape of Mumbai. Their contributions span diverse fields such as literature, arts, music, cinema, business, education, science, social service, sports, and public life. Their journeys of commitment and excellence continue to inspire generations and remain a source of pride for the community.
Through this feature, Kerala in Mumbai seeks to document and honour these remarkable personalities by sharing their stories of achievement, resilience, service, and leadership, thereby preserving an important chapter in the collective memory of Mumbai’s Malayali community.
In this edition of Mumbaiyile Malayali Prathibhakal, we proudly present Karthyayani G. Menon, a remarkable administrator whose life and career are closely intertwined with the history and growth of Mumbai’s iconic Jehangir Art Gallery. Her inspiring story of dedication, perseverance and service was featured in the Kerala in Mumbai magazine June 2014 issue. The article, titled “Dedication Personified,” portrays a woman who rose from an ordinary office assistant to become an indispensable part of one of Mumbai’s most celebrated art institutions.
Born on 5 March 1949, as the sixth child of Kalyani Amma and Mathathil Krishnan Nair in the Thalassery region of Kerala, Karthyayani Menon moved to Mumbai in 1968 to join her elder sister, who was already settled in the city. After completing her education in Kerala, she began her professional journey at Jehangir Art Gallery, initially joining as a clerk. During her school years, she had developed a keen interest in learning Hindi and successfully passed her examination in the language. Her sincerity, willingness to learn and strong work ethic soon became evident. Within six years, she was promoted to the position of Office Superintendent, a progression the article attributes to her dedicated and hardworking approach.
Karthyayani Menon eventually became the Secretary of Jehangir Art Gallery, taking responsibility for the wide range of work involved in running the institution. The article describes her as someone who approached every assignment with commitment and without complaint. Her work brought her into close contact with some of the most celebrated artists, writers, actors, politicians and cultural personalities of the time. She remained actively involved with the gallery and made it a point to understand and appreciate the artworks and artists around her. She herself attributed much of her journey to the blessings and encouragement of renowned artists such as M. F. Husain, K. H. Ara, Hebbar, N. S. Bendre and Gaitonde, among others.
The article also traces the fascinating history of Jehangir Art Gallery, one of Mumbai’s premier art institutions. The gallery was established through the vision and generosity associated with Sir Cowasji Jehangir, with the foundation for its construction taking shape through an agreement involving the government of Maharashtra and the trustees of the museum. The gallery was inaugurated in 1952 and later developed into an institution of international standing. Karthyayani’s long association with the gallery placed her at the centre of Mumbai’s vibrant artistic and cultural world. Over the years, she interacted with eminent personalities including governors, chief ministers, ministers, painters, musicians, actors and literary figures. Photographs in the article capture her association with personalities such as M. F. Husain, Laxman Shrestha, Kekoo Gandhy, Kishor Amonkar, Vidya Balan, Shobhaa De and others.
Beyond her everyday responsibilities, Karthyayani Menon demonstrated remarkable determination in dealing with important administrative and legal matters concerning the gallery. When the institution sought to reclaim space being used by other entities, she was involved in the legal proceedings that followed, attending matters through different levels of the courts over several years. Her efforts eventually contributed to the successful recovery of the premises. Her official and personal duties also took her to different parts of India and abroad. Recognising her long and distinguished service, she received several honours, including the Ratna Award from India International Samskara Deep and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the gallery, among other recognitions.
Karthyayani G. Menon’s story is ultimately one of quiet dedication and extraordinary perseverance—a journey in which commitment to her work earned her the respect of generations of artists and public figures. From her early days as a clerk to her distinguished role at Jehangir Art Gallery, she remained a steadfast presence in Mumbai’s cultural landscape, proving that sincere service, discipline and dedication can leave an enduring mark.
