A controversy has erupted at Vivek Vidyalaya Junior College in Goregaon West after the institution issued a circular prohibiting female junior college students from wearing the burqa, niqab, or any full-body covering attire on campus. According to the new dress code, students may wear the burqa only up to the college gate. Hijab, however, continues to be permitted.

The decision led to strong objections from a section of students. AIMIM advocate Jahanara Sheikh accompanied several female students to the local police station to file an official complaint against the college management. The complaint alleges that the ban violates constitutional rights and demands an immediate withdrawal of the decision.

The college circular states that the updated dress code aims to restrict “religiously revealing clothing” within the campus premises. The management has emphasized uniformity and adherence to academic discipline as the reason behind the new policy.

This incident follows a similar controversy at a private college in Chembur, which also recently banned hijab, burqa, and niqab, resulting in widespread protests and public debate.

The matter is currently under review, and further developments are awaited as students, parents, and community representatives continue discussions with authorities.
