For decades, members of the Malayali community have played a significant role in shaping the social, cultural, educational, and economic landscape of Mumbai. Their contributions span diverse fields such as literature, arts, music, cinema, business, education, science, social service, sports, and public life. Their journeys of commitment and excellence continue to inspire generations and remain a source of pride for the community.
Through this feature, Kerala in Mumbai seeks to document and honour these remarkable personalities by sharing their stories of achievement, resilience, service, and leadership, thereby preserving an important chapter in the collective memory of Mumbai’s Malayali community.
In this edition of Mumbaiyile Malayali Prathibhakal, we proudly feature Thara Varma Sreekant, a versatile Kathakali artist whose dedication and passion have earned her a distinctive place in the world of classical art. Her journey in Kathakali began at a very young age, and over the years, she has trained under several renowned masters.
Thara Varma has performed a wide range of Kathakali characters and has also worked actively to promote and nurture the traditional art form. Alongside her performances, she has conducted workshops and cultural programmes, sharing her knowledge and helping introduce Kathakali to wider audiences.
Her remarkable journey has been recognised with several honours, including the Mumbai Nair Society’s Mahila Navarasa Award and the Kerala Youth Festival Award for Kathakali Performances. She also received recognition for her participation in a Guinness World Record event involving the largest-ever Kathakali performance.
