Mumbayile Malayali Prathibhakal is a regular feature of Kerala in Mumbai, dedicated to celebrating the lives, achievements, and enduring contributions of Malayalees who have distinguished themselves in Mumbai through talent, dedication, perseverance, and hard work.
For decades, members of the Malayali community have played a significant role in shaping the social, cultural, educational, and economic landscape of Mumbai. Their contributions span diverse fields such as literature, arts, music, cinema, business, education, science, social service, sports, and public life. Their journeys of commitment and excellence continue to inspire generations and remain a source of pride for the community.
Through this feature, Kerala in Mumbai seeks to document and honour these remarkable personalities by sharing their stories of achievement, resilience, service, and leadership, thereby preserving an important chapter in the collective memory of Mumbai’s Malayali community.
In this edition of Mumbaiyile Malayali Prathibhakal, we are proud to present Prakash Padikkal, a dedicated social worker, community leader and motivator whose remarkable contributions to public welfare and neighbourhood development were featured in the Kerala in Mumbai magazine’s July 2012 issue. The cover story, titled “Social Worker Avers to Turn Politician,” highlights his commitment to serving society and transforming the lives of people in Mulund.
An engineer by profession and a social worker by choice, Prakash Padikkal devoted decades to public service through the Hillside Residents’ Welfare Association (HIRWA), which he headed. His work focused on turning Mulund into a better and more liveable township, addressing issues ranging from electricity supply and environmental pollution to waste management, public amenities and housing rights. His team also introduced initiatives such as water harvesting, vermiculture, tree planting and environmental protection at Bhandup Industrial Estate, helping create a greener and more sustainable community.
The article also highlights his efforts to take up issues of public interest with government authorities, including campaigns concerning residents’ housing rights, civic facilities and the misuse of public funds. He initiated regular meetings with municipal officials to discuss unresolved civic issues and worked to encourage citizens and young people to hold public representatives accountable. Through his sustained community work, Padikkal emerged as a strong voice for civic responsibility, social welfare and grassroots change in Mumbai.
