I am still unable to come to terms with the passing of S. Janaki Amma. The news has left me deeply saddened, bringing back a flood of cherished memories from one of the proudest moments in Raagalaya’s journey.

In 2006, Raagalaya organised its 2nd Raagalaya Excellence Awards at the prestigious Shanmukhananda Hall, Mumbai. That year, two towering legends of Indian music—S. Janaki Amma and renowned poet-lyricist O. N. V. Kurup—were honoured for their unparalleled contributions to the world of music and literature. Today, both of these extraordinary personalities are no longer with us, but the legacy they created will continue to inspire generations. Legends like them can never be replaced.

The event was made even more memorable by the wholehearted support of the late Capt. C. P. Krishnan Nair, founder of the Leela Group of Hotels. With remarkable generosity, he provided complimentary accommodation for all our award recepients who travelled from South India to attend the Raagalaya Awards every year. His kindness continued year after year until his demise. I can never forget his noble heart and unwavering encouragement.

Following the awards ceremony, an unforgettable musical evening celebrated the evergreen songs associated with these legends. Playback singers Venugopal, Kallara Gopan, Jyotsna, Preetha Kannan and several others mesmerised the audience with their soulful renditions. The programme was beautifully compered by the popular caricature artist and actor Jayaraj Warrier.

One of the sweetest memories from that occasion is deeply personal. My wife, Girija, has always been an ardent admirer of Janaki Amma. When we mentioned this to Janaki Amma, she warmly surprised us by saying that she would like to visit our home. It was a gesture of immense affection and humility from such a legendary artiste. That unforgettable visit remains one of the most treasured memories of our lives.

As was our annual tradition, the winners of the Raagalaya Music Competition had the rare privilege of receiving their awards from the hands of these iconic personalities—an experience they will undoubtedly cherish forever.

Today, as I remember Janaki Amma and O. N. V. Kurup, I bow my head in gratitude for the unforgettable moments they gifted us and for the immense contributions they made to Indian music and literature.

May the noble souls of these two legendary personalities rest in eternal peace. Their melodies, words and memories will continue to live in our hearts forever.
