Veteran Tamil filmmaker P. Bharathiraja, fondly hailed as “Iyakkunar Imayam” (The Peak of Directors), passed away on June 10, 2026 at the age of 85, leaving behind an extraordinary cinematic legacy that transformed the landscape of South Indian cinema. With the passing of legendary filmmaker Indian cinema has lost one of its most influential storytellers. Revered as “Iyakkunar Imayam,” Bharathiraja revolutionised Tamil cinema by taking it out of the confines of studio sets and into the heart of rural India, portraying village life with unprecedented realism, sensitivity and poetic beauty.
Making his directorial debut with the path-breaking 16 Vayathinile in 1977, he went on to create several unforgettable classics including Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Alaigal Oivathillai, Mudhal Mariyathai, Vedham Pudhithu, Kizhakku Cheemayile, and Karuththamma. He has also acted in the malayalam movie “Thudarum”.His films not only entertained audiences but also addressed social issues with courage and compassion. Through memorable characters, powerful narratives and timeless collaborations with composer Ilaiyaraaja, Bharathiraja carved a unique place in Indian cinema.
Recipient of numerous honours, including several National Film Awards, Bharathiraja’s contribution to the world of cinema remains immeasurable. His films continue to inspire generations of filmmakers and movie lovers alike.
Kerala in Mumbai pays heartfelt tribute to this cinematic visionary whose artistry celebrated the soul of ordinary people. Though the maestro is no longer with us, his stories will continue to live on in the hearts of millions.
