Veteran Kathakali artiste reflects on his artistic journey, iconic roles and the enduring bond between tradition and the stage
Kerala: Renowned Kathakali artiste Kottakkal Devadas, celebrated for his commanding stage presence, remarkable versatility and dedication to the classical art form, has described his artistic journey as one that has given him far more than he ever imagined.
In an interview published by Mathrubhumi, Devadas reflected on his early years, his journey through the rigorous world of Kathakali and the experiences that shaped him into one of Kerala’s respected performers. His story is one of passion, perseverance and an enduring commitment to an art form deeply rooted in Kerala’s cultural heritage.
Devadas joined the prestigious PSV Natyasangham at Kottakkal in 1979, at the age of 12. Unlike many who entered the traditional performing arts due to circumstances, his decision to pursue Kathakali was driven by a genuine passion for the art. He made his stage debut the following year, portraying Krishna in Subhadraharanam.
Following eight years of intensive training and two years of advanced studies, he became a permanent artiste of the PSV Natyasangham troupe. His subsequent career has been marked by an exceptional ability to bring complex characters to life through expressive gestures, physical intensity and an impressive command of Kathakali’s demanding performance techniques.

Master of powerful and complex characters
Devadas is particularly acclaimed for his portrayal of fierce and powerful characters, especially the distinctive Thadi (bearded) roles. His performances are noted for their structural precision, dramatic intensity and ability to hold audiences spellbound.
Among his celebrated portrayals are Kali in Nalacharitham (Days 2 and 3), Kalakeyan in Kalakeyavadham, Veerabhadran in Dakshayagam and Rowdrabheeman. His deep immersion in these roles reflects the physical and emotional demands of Kathakali, where an artiste’s discipline and stamina are as essential as artistic expression.
Over the decades, Devadas has emerged as an important link between the traditional masters of Kathakali and a younger generation of enthusiasts. His artistic journey represents both the preservation of inherited traditions and their continued relevance on contemporary stages.
Recognition for a remarkable artistic journey
In May 2022, Devadas was honoured with the prestigious Veera Sringhala at a ceremony in Kozhikode, recognising his contributions to Kathakali. The honour marked an important milestone in a career devoted to the classical performing arts.
Beyond awards and recognition, Devadas considers the stage itself his greatest source of fulfilment. His reflections reveal an artiste who continues to find meaning in performance, artistic exploration and the opportunity to remain connected with audiences.
From a young boy who entered PSV Natyasangham with a passion for Kathakali to an acclaimed performer celebrated for his powerful characterisations, Kottakkal Devadas’s journey stands as a testament to the enduring strength of Kerala’s classical art traditions.
For him, Kathakali has been more than a profession. It has been a lifelong journey of discovery, discipline and devotion.
