NBKS Onam 2026, organised by the New Bombay Keraleeya Samajam (NBKS), Nerul, Navi Mumbai was celebrated with great enthusiasm and festive spirit at Banushali Vadi Hall in Navi Mumbai.
The celebrations began with a warm and traditional welcome to Maveli, accompanied by a vibrant Chendamelam. The function was presided over by Samajam President K. A. Kurup, while General Secretary Prakash Kattakada delivered the welcome address. NORKA Development Officer R. B. Arun was the chief guest. NMMC Corporator Mrs. Netra Shirke also attended the function. Representatives of various Malayali associations and others participated in the celebrations.
A colourful array of cultural programmes added charm to the occasion. The Mahila Wing presented traditional Kaikottikali performances, while musical programmes and performances by students of the Samajam’s Malayalam classes were also staged. The audience enjoyed Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kathak performances, along with special programmes presented by the Youth Wing, Dance Section and other members of the Samajam.
The Samajam’s monthly music festival, ‘Pattarangu’, added a special musical touch to the celebrations. A spectacular Kalaripayattu performance by students undergoing training at the Samajam was another major attraction. The performance showcased the skill and grandeur of Kerala’s traditional martial art and received enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Students who successfully completed their S.S.C. and H.S.C. examinations, as well as winners of the Malayalam Mission’s Neelakurinji examination, were felicitated during the function. Prizes were also presented to the winners of various indoor competitions conducted as part of the Onam celebrations.
The traditional Uriyadi competition and the tug-of-war competition brought added excitement to the festivities. In the tug-of-war competition, Little Flower Forane Church, Nerul, secured first place, while G. & B. Electricals won the second place.
The programme was anchored by Ajitha Deepak. Kala Samiti Convener M. R. Panicker proposed the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to the successful conduct of the celebrations.
With a vibrant blend of tradition, culture and community participation, NBKS Onam 2026 celebrated the rich heritage of Kerala while spreading the timeless message of unity and togetherness associated with Onam. The event thus became a memorable cultural gathering for the Malayali community in Navi Mumbai.
