Mumbai’s suburban rail network is set for a major upgrade with the introduction of fully air-conditioned Vande Metro (Namo Bharat Rapid Rail) trains, which are expected to enter service by 2028. Tenders for over 2,800 coaches are already in progress, marking a significant step towards modernising the city’s crowded local train system.
The new trains, planned in 12, 15 and 18-coach formations, are designed to replace older local trains and offer a safer, faster and more comfortable travel experience. A 12-coach Vande Metro unit will be able to carry over 3,200 passengers, helping ease congestion on the Central and Western Railway corridors.
Equipped with continuous vestibules, sensor-based automatic sliding doors, CCTV surveillance, USB charging points and real-time passenger information systems, the trains promise metro-like convenience for suburban commuters. Special monsoon-proof and flood-resilient features have also been incorporated to ensure smoother operations during heavy rains, a recurring challenge in Mumbai.
Designed for short and medium-distance routes, including the Mumbai–Pune sector, the Vande Metro trains are expected to operate at speeds of up to 130 kmph, significantly reducing travel time and improving daily commuting in the Mumbai region.
