The Malayalam film industry was plunged into grief with the passing of acclaimed actor, director and writer Salim Kumar, who died on 6 June 2026 in Kochi. He was 56.
Born on 10 October 1969 in Chittatukara, North Paravur, Kerala, Salim Kumar rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most celebrated and versatile performers in Malayalam cinema. Over a distinguished career spanning nearly three decades, he appeared in more than 300 films, winning the hearts of audiences with his exceptional comic timing, effortless performances and remarkable ability to portray emotionally intense characters.
Widely regarded as one of the finest comedians in the history of Malayalam cinema, Salim Kumar proved his versatility by delivering powerful dramatic performances as well. His portrayal in the critically acclaimed film “Adaminte Makan Abu” earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor in 2010, one of the highest honours in Indian cinema.
His illustrious career was decorated with numerous accolades, including Kerala State Film Awards in 2005, 2010, 2013 and 2016, the Filmfare Award South (2011), and the Kerala State Television Award for Best Actor (2013). His directorial venture “Karutha Joothan” also won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story in 2017.
Beyond the screen, Salim Kumar was admired for his simplicity, wit and deep connection with ordinary people. Through his unforgettable characters, he brought laughter to millions while also touching hearts with performances that reflected the realities of life.
He is survived by his wife Sunitha, two children, including actor Chandu Salim Kumar, and a vast community of admirers across the world.
