Folklore Seminar on ‘Modern Folklore and Cultural Resistance’ to Be Held in Nerul, Navi Mumbai

As part of the 38th anniversary celebrations of Mumbai Keli, a special seminar on ‘Modern Folklore and Cultural Resistance’ will be held on Sunday at the New Bombay Keraliya Samajam, Nerul, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is organised in connection with the biennial Pranati Festival, which focuses on cultural politics, women’s representation, and contemporary artistic discourse.

The seminar will open with an introductory address by researcher and Prof. Aju Narayanan on ‘Folklore and Folklore as Cultural Forms of Resistance’.
A.V. Ajayakumar, Secretary of the Kerala Folklore Academy and noted researcher, will deliver a talk on ‘Art, Time, Country and the Cultural Landscape of Theyyam’.Scholars from Kalady Sree Sankaracharya Sanskrit University will speak on the ‘Folklore of Koodiyattam’, followed by a lecture by Shibi, history teacher and researcher at the same university.

In the afternoon sessions, writer and researcher Sajaneev Ithithanam will speak on ‘Talapoli: The Fusion of Folk Rhythms’ and ‘Parallel History and the Folklore of Buddhist Movements’.
The seminar is dedicated to the legendary dancer Kannan Peruvannan.

This seminar follows earlier phases held in December 2023 and 2024, which drew significant academic and public attention. An interactive public discussion will conclude the sessions.
