Mumbayile Malayali Prathibhakal is a regular feature of Kerala in Mumbai, dedicated to celebrating the lives, achievements, and enduring contributions of Malayalees who have distinguished themselves in Mumbai through talent, dedication, perseverance, and hard work.
For decades, members of the Malayali community have played a significant role in shaping the social, cultural, educational, and economic landscape of Mumbai. Their contributions span diverse fields such as literature, arts, music, cinema, business, education, science, social service, sports, and public life. Their journeys of commitment and excellence continue to inspire generations and remain a source of pride for the community.
Through this feature, Kerala in Mumbai seeks to document and honour these remarkable personalities by sharing their stories of achievement, resilience, service, and leadership, thereby preserving an important chapter in the collective memory of Mumbai’s Malayali community.
In this edition of Mumbaiyile Malayali Prathibhakal, we proudly present Oommen David, a distinguished educationist and humanitarian whose remarkable contributions have left a lasting impact on Mumbai’s educational landscape. His inspiring journey and dedication to nurturing young minds were featured in the Kerala in Mumbai magazine August 2011 issue.
Born in Kuttamperoor-Mannar in Alleppey, Oommen David completed his education in Kerala and later pursued his post-graduation in English Literature, along with teacher training. He came to Mumbai and entered the teaching profession in 1974. Beginning his career as a teacher at Model English School in Dombivli, his initiative and dedication soon led him to become its Principal. He also served as Principal of St. Thomas English School before embarking on a larger educational mission.
In 1990, Oommen David founded Holy Angels’ School and Junior College in Dombivli under the Trinity Educational Trust, with the objective of providing quality education while developing the educational, cultural and social needs of children and the wider community. Under his leadership, the institution grew into an educational centre known for its strong academic performance, value-based approach and emphasis on the overall development of students. The article highlights its excellent academic results, modern facilities, science laboratories, library, auditorium and playground, as well as its commitment to nurturing creativity and imagination.
Described as a humane educationist, Oommen David believed that education should go beyond academic achievement. His vision was to develop students with knowledge, skills, culture and human values so that they could grow into responsible citizens. He encouraged the younger generation to remain focused on their goals while also caring for the underprivileged, loving their motherland and contributing positively to society. His commitment to quality and standards in education earned the school recognition and helped establish its reputation in Dombivli.
His contributions were recognised through numerous awards and honours, including the Rotary Club of Dombivli’s Rotary Ratna Award, the Best Teacher Award, the Rajiv Gandhi Shiromani Award, the International Gold Star Millennium Award and other recognitions for his educational, social and cultural contributions. He also served in several community and educational organisations, reflecting his continued commitment to public service.
Oommen David’s story is ultimately one of education, service and the transformation of young lives. Through his dedication to teaching and institution-building, he sought to create not merely successful students, but responsible and compassionate citizens. His journey stands as an inspiring example of how a committed educator can make a meaningful difference in the community and leave behind a lasting legacy through education.
