As part of its silver jubilee celebrations, Seawoods Malayali Samajam, Navi Mumbai is set to organise Gramachantha, a grand village market festival recreating the charm and nostalgia of traditional Kerala village life.
The event will be held on June 6 from 4.30 pm onwards at Ganesh Maidan, Sector 48, Seawoods. Entry is free for all visitors.
Known for its innovative community programmes, the Samajam aims to bring alive the spirit of Kerala’s village markets of the 1970s and 1980s through a variety of traditional stalls, cultural performances, and folk-themed attractions.
Visitors can enjoy authentic village-style stalls serving kanji, kappa, refreshments, fish delicacies, tea, payasam, cosmetics, and more, all designed to recreate the atmosphere of old Kerala marketplaces.
One of the major highlights of the evening will be a spectacular Kalaripayattu presentation featuring four rounds of competition, scheduled to conclude at 9.30 pm. Panchagusti competitions will also add excitement to the festivities.
The venue will also feature a traditional bathing stall, swing, library corner, and several folk-inspired experiences aimed at reviving memories of Kerala’s rural heritage.
An old-song music festival and an 80s-style lottery programme are expected to further enhance the nostalgic ambience of the event. A stage drama will also be presented at the venue for a nominal ticket charge.
The organisers said Gramachantha is designed to blend the warmth of the past with the vibrancy of the present, offering younger generations an opportunity to experience Kerala’s traditional village culture while allowing elders to relive cherished memories.
In line with its eco-friendly vision, Seawoods Malayali Samajam is also planning to make the event plastic-free through e-waste collection initiatives and the distribution of high-quality cloth bags as an alternative to plastic bags.
