RAHUL GANDHI’S RAMLILA MAIDAN SPEECH: AN EXAMINATION OF CLAIMS AGAINST FACTS

Rahul Gandhi made several serious allegations at the INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan on 1 November 2026. He accused the Election Commission of stealing votes, questioned the legitimacy of the 2024 Lok Sabha election, accused the Chief Election Commissioner of treason and alleged that democratic institutions had been captured.

These are extremely serious allegations. As a responsible national political leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi has a duty to substantiate them with credible evidence.
Let us examine his principal claims against established facts.

  1. THE CLAIM THAT 13.39 CRORE VOTERS WERE DELETED

The Election Commission’s SIR figures refer to 13.39 crore electors categorised as absent, shifted, deceased, duplicate or falling under other categories.

They were not all genuine voters deliberately deprived of their voting rights.

The published figures include:

  • 3.01 crore absent or untraceable.
  • 6.30 crore permanently shifted.
  • 2.80 crore deceased.
  • 1.02 crore duplicate entries.
  • 0.26 crore other categories.

The Election Commission has provided procedures for claims and objections. Individual cases of wrongful exclusion deserve investigation and correction. But presenting the entire figure as proof of deliberate electoral fraud is misleading.

  1. THE ALLEGATION THAT THE 2024 ELECTION WAS STOLEN

The NDA secured 293 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, while the INDIA bloc secured 233 seats.
The BJP won 240 seats and Congress won 99.
A difference in vote share or a close electoral contest is not evidence of electoral theft. Such a serious allegation requires specific evidence of manipulation.
No established finding has demonstrated the alleged nationwide conspiracy to steal the 2024 election.

  1. THE ALLEGATION AGAINST GYANESH KUMAR

Rahul Gandhi claimed that without Gyanesh Kumar, Narendra Modi would not have become Prime Minister and Amit Shah would not have become Home Minister.

The chronology exposes an important factual distinction.
Gyanesh Kumar became an Election Commissioner on 15 March 2024.
Rajiv Kumar was the Chief Election Commissioner during the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
Rahul Gandhi has not produced publicly established evidence that Gyanesh Kumar manipulated the election or determined its outcome.

  1. THE ACCUSATION OF TREASON AGAINST THE CEC

Rahul Gandhi declared that Gyanesh Kumar would be removed and sent to jail for treason.

Has any competent court convicted the Chief Election Commissioner of treason? No such conviction has been established.

Political allegations cannot be treated as judicial findings. Every citizen, including constitutional office-holders, is entitled to due process and the rule of law.

  1. THE ALLEGATIONS CONCERNING ADANI, AMBANI AND LOAN WAIVERS

Rahul Gandhi alleged that industrialists enjoy loan waivers while farmers suffer for their inability to repay loans.

There is an important distinction he must explain.
A bank loan write-off is not the same as a loan waiver. The Finance Ministry has clarified that a write-off does not extinguish the borrower’s liability. Recovery proceedings can continue.
If there are specific instances of unlawful benefits, the companies, amounts and transactions should be identified and examined.
Generalised allegations cannot substitute for documentary evidence.

  1. THE ALLEGATION THAT RSS HAS CAPTURED ALL INSTITUTIONS

This is another sweeping allegation.
If there has been improper interference in any particular institution, the evidence must be produced. A blanket allegation against every institution does not establish that such capture has taken place.
Each institution must be examined on the basis of its actual functioning, constitutional responsibilities and available evidence.

CONCLUSION

India is the world’s largest democracy. The Election Commission, judiciary and other constitutional institutions must remain accountable and independent.
The Opposition has every right to question the government. However, it also has a responsibility to substantiate serious allegations.

The Supreme Court’s judgment of 27 May 2026 upholding the legal authority of the Election Commission to undertake the SIR is an important constitutional development. Individual grievances must still be addressed through the prescribed procedures.

As Vice President of the Democratic Social Justice Party, I firmly believe that democratic debate must be based on facts, constitutional principles and accountability.

Repeated allegations do not become facts. Political rhetoric cannot replace documentary evidence. And questioning constitutional institutions must never become an excuse for undermining public confidence without proof.

India deserves facts, not fiction; evidence, not exaggeration; and responsible leadership, not allegations without substantiation.
