Veteran actor, filmmaker and one of Indian cinema’s most distinctive performers, Nana Patekar, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the age of 75. His death marks the end of an illustrious career spanning nearly five decades in Hindi and Marathi cinema.

Born Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951, Nana Patekar was known for his intense screen presence, powerful dialogue delivery and extraordinary ability to portray complex and emotionally demanding characters. According to reports, he was found unconscious at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa, following a severe cardiac arrest. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors reportedly attempted to revive him for around 45 minutes, but he could not be saved.

Nana Patekar made his acting debut with the 1978 film Gaman and went on to establish himself as one of the most respected actors in both Hindi and Marathi cinema. His performances were marked by remarkable intensity and a natural, understated style that made him stand apart from his contemporaries.

His breakthrough performances came through films such as Parinda, Prahaar: The Final Attack, Angaar, Tirangaa, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi: The Musical, Apaharan and Natsamrat, among numerous others. He also successfully ventured into filmmaking, directing Prahaar: The Final Attack.

His portrayal in Krantiveer earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor, while his performances in Parinda and Agni Sakshi brought him further National Film Award recognition. He was also the recipient of several Filmfare Awards and other honours. In recognition of his contribution to Indian cinema and the arts, he was conferred the Padma Shri in 2013.
