After nearly eight years of prolonged insolvency proceedings, Seven Hills Hospital at Marol, Andheri East, is set for a major revival, with Reliance Industries emerging as the successful bidder to acquire and redevelop the landmark healthcare facility.
As per the sources, The National Company Law Adjudicating Authority (NCLAT) has approved the resolution plan submitted by the Reliance Group in partnership with Capri Global Holdings, paving the way for the settlement of creditor claims exceeding โน1,000 crore and the infusion of fresh capital to restart hospital operations.
As per the approved plan, creditors will receive around โน449 crore, while former employees and other stakeholders will be paid โน6 crore. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which owns the land on which the hospital stands, has also sought settlement of pending dues amounting to โน223 crore.
Originally inaugurated in 2010 as Mumbaiโs largest private hospital with a built-up capacity of 1,500 beds, Seven Hills Hospital functioned with fewer than 300 beds for most of its operational period. Disputes between the hospital management and the BMC over bed-sharing arrangements for economically weaker patients eventually led to the sealing of the hospital in 2018, following unpaid property tax issues.
Under the new ownership, at least 60 per cent of the hospital beds are proposed to be reserved for economically weaker sections. There are also plans to establish a medical college and develop trauma-care facilities, leveraging the hospitalโs strategic location near Mumbai airport and its existing helipad.
The hospital building, which reportedly requires extensive repairs, is expected to take up to two years to reopen in a revamped form. During the Covid-19 pandemic, portions of the premises were temporarily reopened by the BMC and used as a civic public health centre.
Once fully operational, the revived Seven Hills Hospital is expected to play a significant role in strengthening Mumbaiโs healthcare infrastructure, marking a new chapter for a facility that once symbolised both ambition and controversy.
