Mumbai marked a long-awaited milestone with the commencement of commercial operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), offering the city a much-needed second aviation hub after decades of capacity constraints. The airport began operations with 48 flights on Day One, serving over 4,000 passengers and connecting key domestic destinations.
The launch eases pressure on the single-runway Mumbai airport and significantly enhances air connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Passengers welcomed the modern, spacious terminal and efficient systems, though initial challenges such as approach road signage, last-mile connectivity and transport clarity were noted.
Designed as a future-ready, digital-first airport, NMIA is expected to scale up operations steadily in the coming months, playing a crucial role in boosting regional mobility, economic growth and passenger convenience.
With this landmark development, Mumbai steps confidently into a new era of aviation infrastructure—bringing relief to flyers and fresh momentum to the region’s growth story.
