As Mumbai gears up to celebrate Onam, the Andheri Malayali Samajam (Regd.) is set to bring the colours, fragrance and festive spirit of Kerala to one of the city’s busiest public spaces with a grand Pookalam at Andheri Metro Station.
A giant and colourful floral carpet will be created at Metro 1, Andheri Metro Station, from August 25 to 27 as part of the Samajam’s Onam celebrations. With more than one lakh commuters passing through Andheri Metro Station every day, the three-day floral spectacle is expected to give thousands of Mumbaikars and visitors an opportunity to experience one of Kerala’s most cherished cultural traditions.
Traditionally prepared with fresh flowers during the ten-day Onam celebrations, the Pookalam is much more than a decorative floral arrangement. It symbolises Kerala’s rich cultural heritage, community spirit, harmony and the collective joy associated with the festival.
Through the initiative, the Andheri Malayali Samajam aims to take the essence of Kerala beyond the Malayali community and share it with people from diverse linguistic, cultural and religious backgrounds. For non-Malayali commuters, the Pookalam will offer a glimpse into the traditions, folklore and cultural memories associated with Onam and Kerala. For Malayalis living away from their homeland, it will also evoke nostalgic memories of festive mornings, flowers, family gatherings and community celebrations.
“Onam is a festival that transcends language, religion, region and social boundaries. By bringing a traditional Pookalam to one of Mumbai’s busiest public spaces, we want to share the warmth and inclusiveness of Kerala with the entire city,” representatives of the Andheri Malayali Samajam said.
The Samajam believes that cultural initiatives of this nature can serve as bridges between communities. The Pookalam at Andheri Metro Station is envisaged not merely as an Onam decoration, but as a celebration of India’s cultural diversity and the spirit of togetherness.
The three-day floral display will also offer commuters an opportunity to pause amid the fast-paced life of Mumbai and experience the colours, fragrance and cultural symbolism of Kerala.
The Andheri Malayali Samajam has invited Mumbaikars, Malayalis and visitors from across the city to experience the grand Pookalam and join in celebrating the message of Onam — togetherness, harmony and shared happiness.
