Senior CPI (M) leader M.M. Lawrence (95) passed away on September 21. He was undergoing medical treatment for pneumonia.

Lawrence held several positions in the party during his lifetime. He was the Secretary of Ernakulam district, General Secretary of CITU of Kerala, and also served at the national level. He was the LDF Convenor for 12 years and was elected as a member of Parliament after defeating T.S. John. He was accused in the attack case on Edappally Police Station, following a call from the Communist Party for armed revolution. While associated with the Save CPM Forum as part of CITU, he was demoted to the Ernakulam Area Committee but later returned to the State Committee.

Lawrence was the son of the late Avira Mathew and Mariam Mathew of the Mulavukad Madamakkal family. His wife was the late Baby. His children are Adv. M.L. Sajivan (Special Govt Pleader), the late Adv. M.L. Abraham, M.L. Sujata (Engineer, Dubai), and M.L. Asha (Fashion Designer). The spouses of his children are Mable Mendes, Dr. Soja Luis, and Boban Varghese (Engineer, Dubai).
