Dr. Marthanda Varma Sankaran Valiathan, a renowned figure in Indian medicine and biomedical research, passed away on July 17 at Manipal Hospital, where he was receiving medical care. Born in 1934 to Janaki Varma and Marthanda Varma, Dr. Valiathan made significant contributions to both allopathic and Ayurvedic medicine. After completing his MBBS and gaining experience in Liverpool and England, he returned to Kerala at the invitation of Chief Minister C. Achuta Menon. Dr. Valiathan played a pivotal role in establishing the Sree Chitra Tirunal College of Medical Sciences and Biotechnology in Thiruvananthapuram, where he served as Director and Professor of Cardiology for two decades. Later, he became the first Vice Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education. Dr. Valiathan was instrumental in developing various medical innovations including artificial heart valves, blood bags, and vascular grafts. His pioneering work integrated medicine with technology, laying the groundwork for India's medical devices industry. Recognized with the Padma Shri in 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2005, Dr. Valiathan was also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and served as President of the Indian National Science Academy. Throughout his career, Dr. Valiathan remained dedicated to bridging the gap between traditional and modern medicine, exploring the depths of Ayurveda and publishing notable works on ancient Indian medical texts.
