Subhash Dandekar, the founder of Kokuyo Camlin Company in Marol, has passed away at the age of 86. He played a pivotal role in revolutionizing India's art supplies industry by introducing locally produced colours and stationery items. Founded by his father Digambar Dandekar in 1931, Camlin initially focused on manufacturing ink. Subhash Dandekar expanded the company's offerings to include colours in 1964, despite initial resistance from artists. Through dedication to quality, Camlin eventually gained widespread acceptance. Under his leadership, Camlin diversified its product line to include pens, pencils, and instrument boxes, establishing the brand as a comprehensive stationery provider by 1971. In 2011, the Japanese company Kokuyo acquired 50% of Camlin's shares, boosting its market value to Rs 1555 crores. Subhash Dandekar, also the former President of Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, passed away on July 15.
