The Supreme Court has agreed to expedite a petition challenging the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) over transparency issues. The case, brought by Sanjeev Chaturvedi, an Indian Forest Service officer, seeks information on corruption cases against union ministers and details on black money brought to India from abroad. Chaturvedi initially sought this information from the Central Information Commission (CIC) under the Right to Information Act for the period from June 1, 2014, to August 5, 2017. The CIC directed the PMO to provide the information, but the PMO refused, citing ambiguity and the issue’s exclusion from the RTI Act's scope. After his requests were ignored and his petition was rejected by the Delhi High Court, Chaturvedi appealed to the Supreme Court. He argues that the High Court's decision undermines citizens' right to know about Union Government transactions and questions whether the CIC can alter its previous stance.
