The Environment Ministry has granted permission for the expansion of the runway at Kozhikode Karipur Airport, according to Air Travel Minister Muralidhar Mahol. This announcement came in response to a question from Adv. Harris Beeran, M.P. Due to the insufficient length of the runway, large aircraft classified under Code D and E have been unable to land at the airport since the air crash in 2020. Consequently, only smaller aircraft have been using the airport. Although government approval for the expansion was granted last February, the recent approval from the Environment Ministry was crucial for moving forward. An expert committee, formed after the crash, recommended a 240-meter extension at both ends of the runway. To accommodate this expansion, the airport authority requires 14.5 acres of land. The state government has provided 12.5 acres, and the Airport Authority has received a sanction of Rs 484 crores for the project.
