Indian democracy today faces six challenges, including personal worship, states historian Ramachandra Guha. He was addressing a gathering at Kozhikode, to pay homage to the late M P Virendrakumar a multiple personality engaged in playing several roles simultaneously, on the his death anniversary.

Virendrakumar was a writer, socialist leader, Chairman and Managing Editor of Mathrubhumi and a celebrated orator.

According to Ramachandra Guha, the main challenges to Indian democracy are the wrong message given to followers by family oriented leadership, the decline of constitutional offices, inequality based on economy and gender, real problems placed by the environment factors, autocracy of the majority etc are falling under these challenges.

Democratic values worked well between 1990 and 2014 under governments jointly run by multiple parties, because none of them had enough strength for majority. They respected each other and took decisions after mutual consultations. Minority parties generated self confidence. Nation advanced economically. Federalism got strengthened and judicial system emboldened. Interference in judicial system reduced. Ramachandra Guha reasoned.

It is better if no party has got more than 230 seats. PM Modi claims he is God. Followers echoed that claim. It is not applicable to Modi alone. Everywhere across India this trend exists.

Mamta is none but Modi inside a sari. Modi in white kurtha and dhoti is Navin Patnaik. Kejriwal is no different. It is applicable to Pinarayi Vijayan too, he said.
