Renowned Malayalam litterateur M.T. Vasudevan Nair celebrates his 92nd birthday today, according to the Malayalam almanac. Born on Uthrattadi in the month of Karkataka, Nair has made significant contributions to literature through his work in short stories, novels, screenplays, plays, and essays. Nair's influence extends beyond literature; many Ph.D. scholars in Kerala and beyond have studied his works. His diverse career includes roles as a film director, producer, dramatist, and jury member for various literary and film panels. Starting his writing career in school and continuing at Victoria College, Nair's first published work was a collection of short stories titled Raktam Puranta Mannthirikal (Blood-Soiled Sands). His novel Nalukettu and collaborative work Arabiponnu are notable, and his stories have been adapted into acclaimed films like Nirmalyam and Iruttinte Atmavu. He won the Jnanpith Award for his novel Rantamoozham, based on the Mahabharata's Bhima. Nair began his career as an untrained teacher before transitioning to journalism, where he eventually became Editor of Mathrubhumi Weekly. Although he has not written an autobiography, his experiences are reflected in his works, including the memoirs Ammakyayi and Snehadarangalote. Nair received Rs. 500 for his short story Valarthumrugangal (Tamed Animals), which he dedicated to his father, who once criticized his writing. Kerala in Mumbai has been featuring articles on Nair’s creative work since February 2014.
