Alzheimer's disease, a slow but progressive type of dementia affecting mainly those aged 65 and above, poses significant challenges as there is currently no cure, only medical treatments to slow its progression. Decades ago, it was less understood due to shorter lifespans and limited medical assistance. Recently, AIIMS Delhi has pioneered a breakthrough with a blood test that detects Alzheimer’s disease up to 15 years before symptoms appear. Researchers tested 90 patients using blood markers to identify early signs of Alzheimer’s, crucially amyloid beta and tau proteins which disrupt brain functions.

This innovation is poised to revolutionize Alzheimer's therapy by enabling early intervention and lifestyle adjustments in mid-adulthood, potentially delaying degeneration. While there is no cure, early detection allows for symptom management and preserving patients' function levels. The research, supported by the Indian Council of Medical Research and Department of Health Research, aims to secure further funding for larger trials. Successful validation could establish India as a leader in dementia management and address a critical gap in early diagnostic tools for Alzheimer’s disease.
