The officials of the Health Department of Shornur Municipality had a shock of their lives when they raided two kitchens preparing food for the food vendors of Shornur Railway Station. The bell metal vessels used for preparing vada were washed months ago, cattle sheds and dirty water gathered around the kitchen and surroundings, open water tank, dirty utensils, never changing cooking oil- etc welcomed them. The health department instantly ordered closure of the kitchens. The raid was conducted when a passenger complained about a dead frog inside a vada he bought from the railway stall. According to one officer, the owners of the kitchen never throw out used oils but pour oil into the frying vessel when the quantity of oil gets reduced during frying, even when the oil becomes very black and hence there was no cleaning of the frying vessel. The kitchens did not have license from the corporation but had approval from the food security department.
