The long-awaited Justice K. Hema Commission Report, which investigated issues faced by women in the Malayalam film industry, has been released.
The report reveals severe discrimination against women in the industry and recommends eliminating gender-based pay disparities. It also calls for a ban on drugs and alcohol at film locations, mandates safe accommodation and travel arrangements for women, and ensures that those with criminal backgrounds are not hired as drivers.
The commission's findings indicate that women often face pressures to make compromises, suggesting the presence of a casting couch. Additionally, it recommends that no bans be imposed on individuals within the industry.
The report states: “As the study progressed into the issues faced by women in the industry, it started revealing that the glamour of the industry is merely exterior glitter.”
The commission, led by retired Justice K. Hema, submitted the 233-page report to the state government on December 31, 2019. The commission was established to examine issues such as sexual harassment and gender inequality in Mollywood, following the assault of an actor allegedly orchestrated by actor Dileep.
The release of the report was delayed due to its sensitive content. A division bench of the Kerala High Court dismissed a plea by actor Ranjini, seeking a review before the report’s public release. To protect the privacy of those mentioned, 63 pages of sensitive information were removed from the original 295-page report.
Kerala Culture Minister Saji Cherian stated that the government is committed to addressing the issues raised and will incorporate protections for female artistes into a new policy.
Reactions have been mixed:
Siddique, General Secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA), said he would respond after reviewing the report. He emphasized the need for careful consideration and correction of any issues, including the casting couch.
Saji Cherian, Minister for Culture and Movies, promised that the government would address the report’s findings and integrate solutions into future policy.
V.D. Satheesan, Leader of the Opposition, criticized the Chief Minister for concealing the report for over four years and called for immediate action against sexual exploitation and drug use, as well as legal consequences for those involved in sexual exploitation, regardless of their status.
