On Sunday afternoon through Monday noon, Kerala was rocked by a storm of controversy initiated by P.V. Anwar, Marxist MLA from Nilambur, who raised fears about the potential collapse of the Kerala ministry led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Anwar accused the Chief Minister, who also serves as the Minister for Home Affairs, of corruption, drug, and gold trafficking, claiming it was occurring under his watch.
On Sunday, Anwar protested outside the Malappuram SP’s quarters, staging a sit-in after being denied entry. Malayalam newspapers featured photos of him under a red umbrella. He made severe allegations, including claims that ADGP Ajitkumar was involved in trafficking drugs and gold, conspiring against people in police custody, and eavesdropping on the conversations of government officials, ministers, and even his superiors. These accusations diverted attention from the Justice Hema Committee Report and allowed the accused some respite.
On September 2, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that allegations against ADGP Ajitkumar, Malappuram SP Sujitdas, and his own political secretary, Sasi, would be investigated. This declaration, made during the Kerala Police Association conference in Kottayam, was met with approval from the public, who anticipated justice for all involved.
Anwar later alleged that ADGP Ajitkumar had constructed a lavish bungalow on a 10-cent plot within the Kowdiar Palace premises in Thiruvananthapuram. He claimed that Ajitkumar and his brother-in-law had acquired this land, valued between 60 to 70 lakhs per cent, and built a multi-storied bungalow measuring approximately 12,000 to 15,000 square feet. With investigations ongoing, the situation remains fluid, and no definitive follow-up actions have yet been announced.
