The National Awards for 2022 were announced on August 16, and Malayalam cinema has reaped a rich harvest.
Attam was named the Best Indian Film of 2022 and won the Gold Medal. It combined life and drama and was directed by Anand Ekarshi, who won the award for Best Screenplay. Nithya Menen was named Best Actress for her role in Thiruchitrambalam, a Tamil movie, but Malayalees are proud as she is from Kerala. She shares this honor with Manasi Parekh of Katch Express, a Gujarati film. Rishab Shetty won Best Actor for his role in Kanthara (Kannada), and his film was selected as the Most Popular Film. Suraj R. Barjatya was named Best Director for his Hindi film Oonchayi. Attam will receive Rs 3 lakhs and a gold medal. Pavanraj Malhotra of Fouja received the award for Best Character Actor, while Neena Gupta won Best Character Actress for Oonchayi. Shreepat was named Best Child Actor for Malikappuram. Pramodkumar is the Best Debutant Director for Fouja, and Mahesh Bhuvanend is the Best Editor for Attam. A.R. Rahman (for Ponniyin Selvan) shared the award for Best Music Score with Preetam (for Brahmastra). The Best Malayalam Film of the year went to Saudi Vellakka, which received a Silver Medal. Bombay Jayashri was chosen as Best Playback Singer for Vellakka.
