Thakazhi Short Story Award of this year instituted by Thakazhi Memorial Samiti under the Department of Culture of Government of Kerala, goes to Kanakkoor Sureshkumar, a resident of Mumbai. V M Mridul, Kanakkoor Sureshkumar and Jinsha Ganga get the first, second and third prizes respectively. The awards will be presented by Prof M K Sanu on June 1 at a function to be held at Thakazhi.
 Sureshkumar is working in Atomic Energy Commission. He is very active in the fields of arts and culture of Mumbai. Last year he received Sukumar Azhikode Tatwamasi Jyotirgamaya Award. He has received Golden Cat Short Story Award of Arts Hyderabad, Aksharasri Award of Lok Kalyan Malayali Samajam.

Besides the above, he has also received Mahakeraleeyam Story Award, V T Gopalakrishnan Award, Yes Space Novel Award, C V Sreeraman Short Story Award and Bangalore Writers Forum Award etc. He has published several books of short stories and novels.

The ride-hailing platform has discovered a likely fake-fare scam, where few drivers are purportedly showing passengers a higher fare.
In recent incidents, Few Uber drivers have been exposed for using fake screenshots to scam passengers out for more money. This deceitful practice involves manipulating trip details to inflate fares, leaving riders with unjustified charges.

The scam works by this few drivers altering screenshots to show longer routes or higher fares than the actual journey taken. This sneaky tactic often goes unnoticed until passengers receive their receipts, by which time it's challenging to dispute the charges.

Uber has pledged to investigate and take action against drivers engaging in fraudulent behaviour. However, users are urged to stay vigilant by double-checking trip details and reporting any suspicious activity promptly in order to avoid falling victim to such scams.

School going girls during the early part of 1950s, were crazy of two songs “AAnathalayolam venna tarameta..” and Ambiliammava..” and were dancing to those songs during school anniversaries. These songs were from films Jeevitanouka and Achchanand the same girl danced for both the songs in those films. That girl was Baby Girija (P.P. Girija)

Girija is now passed away. She was 83 years old. The actress breathed her last on May 11 at her residence in Anna Nagar, Chennai.

Girija earned fame in Malayalam through the movie ‘Jeevitha Nouka’. The movie was released in 1951. In the K Vembu directorial, Baby Girija (P P Girija) enacted the childhood portions of the female lead essayed by B S Saroja. In the years that followed, Baby Girija went on to star in several Malayalam films including ‘Achchan’, ‘Vishappinte Vili’, ‘Premalekha’, ‘Avan Varunnu,’ ‘Kitappatam’ and ‘Puthradharma.

Dr. Jolly Andrews, the Principal of Irinjalakuda Christ College, inaugurated the Chapter, and Father Joy Peenikkaparambil, the College Manager, delivered the keynote address. Both were honored by the Chapter Secretary, Dr. Anilkumar. The initiative to form the Chapter was led by K. J. Joseph.

Christ College Alumni form Mumbai Chapter

The Malayalam film industry is mourning the loss of acclaimed director Sangeeth Sivan, who passed away in Mumbai on May 8, 2024. Sivan, a prominent figure in both Malayalam and Hindi cinema, hailed from a family deeply rooted in filmmaking. Born into a family of filmmakers, Sangeeth was the eldest son of director Sivan, and his brothers Santosh Sivan and Sanjeev Sivan are also notable figures in the industry.

Sivan's directorial journey began with the Malayalam film 'Vyooham,' but it was his 1992 film 'Yodha' that marked a significant milestone in his career. Starring Mohanlal, 'Yodha' was praised for its innovative storytelling and compelling direction, establishing Sivan as a leading director in Malayalam cinema.

In addition to his work in Malayalam films, Sivan made significant contributions to Hindi cinema. His Hindi directorial debut, 'Zor,' featuring Sunny Deol, was well-received. Sivan continued to explore creative avenues, directing projects like Jackie Shroff's 'Sandhya' and 'Pantaloons' Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne,' known for their distinct narrative style and compelling storytelling.

Collaborating with prominent actors such as Mohanlal in 'Nirnayam' and 'Gandharvam,' Sivan's films gained cult status among audiences. His last directorial venture was the TV series 'Bhram,' showcasing his versatility and passion for storytelling in various formats.

Sangeeth Sivan's legacy will be remembered for his unique contributions to filmmaking and the powerful narratives he brought to the screen. His death is a significant loss to the cinematic world, leaving behind a repertoire of films that will continue to inspire future generations.

Renowned Director Sangeeth Sivan Passes Away

Renowned director and screenplay writer Harikumar passed away on May 6, 2024 after a battle with cancer. He took his last breath at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 70.

He started his career as  a director with Ambalppoove in 1981. His most notable film was Sukrutam (1994) based on the screenplay by MT Vasudevan Nair with Mammootty in the lead role. It received several awards including the National award for the best Malayalam film. It sketched the life of an editor Ravi Sankar who confronted his death face to face and struggled to make a comeback. He directed about 20 films including Udyanapalakan (Gardner), Ezhunnallathu and Clint, his other prominent films. His Kattu vannu vilhichappol (When the wind came knocking), secured six state awards including the best story.

Harikumar started his career as an engineer in Town Planning Department of Kollam Municipal Corporation. He resigned his job to join the film industry. His last film was Autorikshakkarante Bharya (Wife of an Autorickshaw driver).

He is survived by his daughters Ammu and Geetanjali. His wife Chandrika predeceased him.

Film Director Harikumar passed away

Kanakalata the actress who entertained the film and serial lovers for more than three decades, through 30 serials and 350 films in Malayalam and Tamil languages, is no more. She was 64. She was suffering from amnesia and Parkinson's disease.  She died at her house in Thiruvananthapuram.

Kanakalata arrived in movies through stage plays. She was suffering the diseases for the last few years. Since October 22 she was admitted in ICU till November 5 last year. After 16 years of married life, she was divorced. She has no children.

The signs of her diseases were noticed in August 2021. Lack of sleep was the first symptom. On medical examination, it was found to be the beginning of dementia

Kanakalata was born Ochira, Kollam district on August 24, 1960 to Parameswaran Pillai and Chinnamma. She had acted in plays such as Pramani, Indulekha and Swati Tirunal. Her films include Chillu, Kariyila kattupole, Rajavinte Makan, Jagrata, Kireetam, Ente Sooryaputrikku, Ammayane Satyam, Adyathe Kanmani, Thacholi Varghese Chekavar, Spadikam, Bandhukkal Shatrukkal, Aniyathi Pravu, Harikrishnans, Mattuppetti Machan, Priyam, Panchavarna Thatha and Ākashaganga. Pookkalam released last year is her last film.

Actress Kanakalata is no more

He has written lyrics for not more than 10 films but his first song itself drew attention of discerning music lovers. Kâttu vannu, ninte kâmukan vannu was the first line of that song and it still reverberates in his admires but the lyricist is no more. Lyricist G K Pallath (P Govindankutty) breathed his last. He was 82.

The above mentioned song was written for the film Pâdasaram, produced by actor T G Ravi in 1978, composed by G Devarajan and rendered by P Jayachandran. His other movies are Chora chuvanna chora, Chakara, Amrutageetam, Kâttutī, Kâlhichakram,. Vâlkkannaťi, Kumkumapottu, Noolpalam and Veerachrinkhala. He also authored two plays Dhoothaputri and Kuťumbavilhakku.

Pallathu retired from service as Deputy Tahisildar. He is survived by his wife N Rajalakshmi,and children Nayana Suhas and Radhik

Lyricist G K Pallath no more

Shashi Tharoor, Thiruvananthapuram M P, arrived at Pune on a two day visit.on May 5th. He attended several events in Pune and on May 6, he would attend a meeting organised by Malayalees of Pune. This meeting will take place at J W Marriot Hotel on Senapati Bapat Road.

Ananya made her debut at the Studio Theatre, Jio World, BKC, Bandra East, on May 1st, showcasing her talent and dedication to Bharatanatyam. However, Ananya's journey to the stage was not without hurdles.

Before sharing the pictures of her performance, it's worth mentioning that Ananya's remarkable display was driven by sheer willpower and dedication to her art, despite facing health challenges. She battled a high temperature, cough, runny nose, and severe acidity problems since the eve of her Arangetram, which worsened on the day of the performance.

Ananya's parent's, teacher popular dance artist Nisha Gilbert, musicians and the entire NSD team, were under immense stress, unable to express their concerns. Ananya's determination taught everyone a lesson in hope. Despite the odds, she refused to give up until the Mangalam concluded, performing her Margam for two hours.

Ananya's mother, Usha Sreeni, and father, Sreenivasan, can be immensely proud of their daughter's resilience and passion for Bharatanatyam. Smt. Prema , Ananya's grandmother and the source of her inspiration, can also take pride in her granddaughter's accomplishments.

Sahitya Charcha of Kalyan Samskarika Vedi of East Kalyan Keraleeya Samajam was successfully held.  This was the second edition of the monthly event. It was inaugurated by writer Kanakkoor Sureshkumar. Chief Guest artist Gayatri spoke about the “Sky of creative reading and preface of writing”. Rajan Panicker presided over the event. Samajam President Lalita Menon delivered the welcome address while Santosh Pallashana was the moderator. Tatwamasi, Dr Sukumar Azhikode  Literary Award meant for the non-resident Malayali litterateur went to Mumbai resident  Suresh Varma this year. His Lal Tambe (collection of short stories) is the chosen work. This book was released during the ‘Akshara Sandhya’ of Nerul Keraleeya Samajam last year.

Suresh Varma was an employee of Railways. He hails from Krishnapuram near Kayamkulam. Earlier he had received V T Gopalakrishnan Award of Mumbai Sahityavedi, Janashakti Award, Khasak Award of Atmayanam etc

They named it ‘Palakkad Peruma.’ In a meeting held at the Kalyana Mandapam of Sri Krishna Temple, Nigdi, attended by more than 120 persons, the new collective is born and it was inaugurated by former treasurer of the temple, Shri Narayanankutty.

Former member of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation Babu Nair, industrialist K C Nair, labour leader Vasudevan Nair, Achuthan Nair, Sridevi Nair et al were among those present. Ilayaraja is not the lone claimant to royalty to the music he composed, clarified the Madras High Court. The HC bench consisting of Justices R Mahadevan and Mohammed Sadiq clarified that without the lines, music cannot sustain itself and therefore everyone associated with the song has a claim for the royalty. Echo Music Company has bought the copyright of about 4,500 songs composed by Ilayaraja from producers associated with those songs. Earlier a single bench of HC had given a judgement in favour of the music director but while considering the appeal, the bench over-ruled this ruling.

When the producer entrusts someone to compose music for his film, the copyright is vested with the producer. Though the music director has claim of copyright on his tunes, he has no claim of copyright on the lyrics. The bench asked if the tunes have any existence without the lyrics.

The Bench will hear the case in detail during the second week of June. On an earlier date, the Bench had warned Ilayaraja not consider himself above all others in the music world.

This annual award, commemorating Saidu Mohammed's death anniversary, honors individuals who have made exceptional contributions to social work and journalism. 
This year, the Gramaratnam Award was presented to Premlal Raman, producer and director of the renowned "Amchi Mumbai" program of KAIRALI TV. With an impressive journalism career spanning 25 years, Premlal Raman has worked with esteemed publications such as Whiteline Vartha and KAIRALI TV.

He has produced great films like Thoovana Thumpikal, Moonnampakkam, Nombarathi poovu, Malootti, Ithiri Neram Othiri Karyam etc. He was a close friend of director Padma Rajan, K. G. George, Mohanlal, Venu Nagavalli et-al. He was unwell for some time. The last rites will be performed at Shanti Kavadom crematorium tomorrow on 11th April 2024.

In an interview given to a youtube channel which went viral, Mohiniyattam exponent Kalamandalam Sathyabhama made several controversial remarks aganist Mohiniyattam artist RLV Ramakrishnan who is the brother of malayalam actor late Kalabhavan Mani. She also used colourist adjectives to describe male dancers saying only "fair skinned good looking men" are eligible to perform Mohiniyattam. She also added, it is disgusting to watch male dancers perform Mohiniyattam which is meant for "Mohinis" only. Skin complexions of few dancers are dark as a crow, their own mothers would not want to look at them, she remarked. This has created lots of criticism and people came in support of Ramakrishnan.
